Dirty Teardrops

May 17, 2016

Books. I love em’. The song “Dirty Teardrops” was born in the middle of one of my favorite reads, “The Irresistible Revolution” by Shane Claiborne. Jam packed with practicality on how to live intentionally, simply, and most of all out of love. Whether it be poverty, modern day slavery, environmental issues, politics and so on, I believe we have a responsibility to educate ourselves on topics of world issues and injustice. Especially considering the resources we are so blessed to use in North America, we really have no excuse.

For one year I Iived with photographer Katie Ann. There was a particular photo I would look at each day which she had displayed on the sunshine colored walls. It captured a young boy from her travels with big beautiful eyes looking upwards towards the camera. Although I know nothing about his story it would remind me to be aware of my brothers and sisters globally, not just my own community. It is SO easy to get caught up in our own little world and forget about how everything is extremely globally connected.

“I see your precious eyes as dirty teardrops fall from the sky. You cry, for there’s innocence amongst the unjust…”

So much can be expressed through one’s eyes. Words aren’t always necessary for us to portray our emotions or circumstances. I imagine images of the eyes of those caught in cases of injustice. I picture their Creator, one who is completely pure, looking over them with tears pouring upon them. Each teardrop being stained because injustice is so filthy compared to the Maker. His heart breaks over the beloved.

“Love until it hurts, and then let us love even more.” ~Mother Teresa

DIRTY TEARDROPS

I SEE YOUR PRECIOUS EYES/ AS DIRTY TEARDROPS FALL FROM THE SKY/ YOU CRY, FOR THERE’S INNOCENCE AMONGST THE UNJUST/ MAYBE THE ANGELS ARE REALLY/ THE BUMS ON THE CORNER OF THE ALLEY/ OH, WHAT THEN?/ WOULD YOU TOUCH THEM?/ COULD YOU LOVE THEM?/ YOU FEEL SAFE/ BUT HE SAYS LOVE UNTIL IT HURTS/ THEN LET US LOVE EVEN MORE/ OH WHY DO WE PUSH THEM AWAY?/ COME, LET’S FEED THE POOR, THE HUNGRY TODAY/ THIS MAY DISTURB YOU/ BUT I THINK THAT’S OKAY/ LET’S SAY YOU WERE IN THEIR SHOES/ THE RICH WERE POOR AND THE POOR WERE RICH/ OH, WHAT THEN?/ WOULD YOU TOUCH THEM? COULD YOU LOVE THEM?
